What a lovely experience! I spent my birthday having dinner at Thompson Italian, and it was hands down the best meal I've had since living in the DC area. My boyfriend made reservations several weeks in advance, so plan accordingly. We ordered the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer and they were perfectly flavored with a spicy aoli. The complimentary bread and oil was also really good. We ordered the parpadelle pasta and they were perfectly roasted half chicken and split them. It was the perfect amount of food, we actually had leftovers! (We NEVER have leftovers) so the portions were generous. The restaurant itself is fairly small, very chic, with a great ambiance for date night or a special occasion. Not a great place for kids. Bathrooms were clean. Service was excellent! Everyone was friendly and attentive. Parking is available in the surrounding area fairly easily. We will absolutely be back!

First of all it's really 4 1/2 stars but yelp doesn't let you do that. We get takeaway from this place all the time. The food is excellent and doesn't ever dissapoint. The 1/2 star is for the young ladies seated behind us that were screaming out with laughter and talking very loud - probably alone because they struck out on a lot of dates - maybe because they're speaking so LOUD - ya think? Back in the Italian restaurants in Philly I used to go to they'd be ask to tone it down or be evacuated from the establishment. Neither happened so I take away a 1/2 star from Thompson's due to their inaction. Otherwise our Spaghetti alla Chitarra was excellent along with the garlic bread and topped off by a very good tiramisu and cappuccino. Highly recommend just watch where you're seated.

We did not have a reservation on a Friday night, but the bar seats a good number of ppl and we were able to get 3 seats; it is first come first served. The food is fantastic. We started with garlic bread and then split a Caesar salad and then had the rigatoni with Bolognese sauce and the tortelloni with brown butter, sage, & ricotta. They have a full bar and a nice selection of wine. We also had a chocolate cake with vanilla cream. That was also very tasty. If you are staying in or around old town Alexandria and are looking for Italian food, secure a reservation. The dining room is intimate. Enjoy!

One of my managers at work had recommended me this restaurant and it did not disappoint. I am obsessed with the intimate ambiance inside the restaurant and their food is wonderful. One could say they have smaller portions but I thought it was the perfect amount. I had my birthday dinner here with a few friends and the service was fantastic. They were extremely attentive and they brought out not one but two birthday desserts (this was an accident but it made it for a great story that night). Also, be sure to check out their bathroom, they have cool and notable wallpaper. Their pasta choices range from classic to unique ones and their affogato is phenomenal. Side note: parking is a little rough to find but there are a few places if you look around the area.

We can't wait to return for another meal! Every dish was delicious but our server was amazing and really gave us good recommendations. Everyone was so nice and friendly, it truly made our dining experience 5 stars for my birthday dinner. Food wise, everything we ordered was great. I really appreciated the food not being too salty and everything was piping hot when they brought it out. Great mix of flavors and fresh ingredients. Perfect.

A group of us came for dinner for my birthday celebration, and we were seated immediately. We got several apps: burrata, artichokes, and garlic bread. Both the burrata and artichoke were good, and I would get them again. Garlic bread was standard but I would skip it as the focaccia was better (and you can get unlimited focaccia). I got the squid ink linguine was good, however it didn't amaze me. We also got the olive oil cake was good, but didn't blow my mind (and I enjoy olive oil things like olive oil ice cream!). The birthday cake was a chocolate small cake, but I wasn't a fan as I don't like dark/double chocolate. They have a pasta and wine night on Mondays where pasta and a glass of wine was $30 (excluding any specials). The KP garage is free after 5pm on weekdays. Corkage fee is $25. Overall, I would come back and try a different pasta next time and get the apps again.

My wife and I are both huge fresh pasta fanatics and routinely seek out the best places to get our noodle craving satisfied. Thompson Italian hit the mark for us and served some truly great pastas. We dined on a Saturday night and the restaurant appeared packed, so definitely make a reservation for weekends. The ambiance here is tidy and a little understated. Influencers may be disappointed, but those in for the food won't mind. We shared two starters and two pasta dishes. Both of us arrived quite hungry, so this ended up an ideal amount of food. We began with the seasonal fig and ricotta special and the pork meatball appetizers. The pork meatballs had a tender texture and arrived swimming in a delectable, rich tomato gravy. The fig special smartly paired creamy ricotta with sweet, fresh figs and salty, crunchy pieces of guanciale. Both dishes paired well with the complimentary focaccia served to each table. Our pastas arrived shortly afterwards. We opted for the lamb sausage cavatelli and the squid ink linguini. The texture of the cavatelli struck the ideal balance between pillowy and toothsome. The lamb sausage ragu offered a meaty texture and a strong tomato backbone, and the dish overall tasted hearty and comforting. The squid ink pasta benefited from a tomato-butter sauce that melded well with the briny flavor of the noodles. Sweet summer corn and plump shrimp made for a savory, fresh, and briny flavor in each forkful. Prices here ran as expected for a restaurant of this caliber, expect to spend at least $50 per person for food and drink. Service could have been a bit more welcoming, as our waitress did not really explain the menu, offer suggestions, or provide much hospitality besides taking our order. Regardless of that, we highly enjoyed the food and are looking forward to sampling more varieties of pastas on future visits.

I rarely crave Italian food when we are deciding where to eat but this place is special. The food options are great, I want to eat the whole menu. The seasonal choices are creative yet not alienating. The fried artichokes surpassed my expectations! Would absolutely go again. Make sure to get reservations, it may be a loooong wait otherwise. We've had Thompson carry out and dine-in. I can't really explain it but the dine in is tastier!
